An In-Depth Look At Softerra LDAP Administrator
LDAP Administrator is made for technical users familiar with LDAP query language. Its good
for software developers, and a certain class of IT administrators. With a polished, modern user interface, it is a more user-friendly version of LDP. I installed the product easily on my virtual machine test lab, but it took a little while to connect it to AD. Since I was running it on the domain controller while logged on as an Administrator I thought it would detect AD, and automatically bind to it using the current Windows security context. However, you first have to configure credentials and a base DN in order to bind to AD.
The Directory Search dialog box is activated by either clicking on the Directory Search menu item on the main toolbar, or right clicking an OU and selecting Directory Search from a context menu. You can enter a base OU to search, a search filter, and attributes to display. You can tell that attention has been paid to details from a number of handy features including drop-down combo boxes that contain the text previously entered, the ability to save your search results to multiple file formats, a favorites book marking feature for quick access to the objects you access most frequently, the ability to back up objects to an LDIF file, and most importantly in my opinion the LDAP filter builder functionality.
LDAP filter builder simplifies creating LDAP queries. An icon next to the filter text box pops up the filter builder window. As you can see from the screen-shot below, it has intellisense providing suggestions as you type your query. A check button validates the query. From the error message shown in the screen-shot below I quickly noticed that I had missed a parenthesis in my query. The query is represented in a graphical format for easier reading, too.
The dialogs for adding members to a group, and adding groups to a member are very similar to those of other AD software packages.
LDAP Administrator includes support for template-based object creation. It comes with some pre-configured templates that you can use out of the box or modify to fit your requirements. The list of pre-built templates is accessed from the Entry menu item on the main toolbar. Below you can see the list of templates and the User template.
