Maxpowersoft vs. Jiji Active Directory Reports
In this post, and in the video below, I look at Maxpowersoft’s AD reporting tool, and compare it to Jiji’s offering. Getting the the trial version of Maxpowersoft’s AD Reports up and running was a little different. I downloaded it from the Maxpowersoft website without being prompted to provide any registration information, but then when I ran it everything was disabled. I had to go back to the website and register for a free trial. An xml registration file was emailed to me, and from AD Reports had to click on the Register menu item and point it to the xml file before I was able to get the product to work.
Maxpowersoft’s user interface is very similar to Jiji’s, but I prefer Maxpowersoft’s. It has nice icons, a log output window, a basic AD browser, and includes a “Selected Properties” section that shows more details for any row you select in the main report grid. As with Jiji’s reporting tool, Maxpowersoft’s allows you to customize any report by adding or removing AD attribute columns to the report grid. Jiji’s has a larger list of attributes that can be used for customizing reports. It would have been nice if Maxpowersoft allowed you to customize the “Selected Properties” details view in addition to the main report grid.
Both product’s include a large number of reports, but as you can see in the break down below, Jiji’s tool has a lot more.
Maxpowersoft : 41 User Reports , 16 Group Reports, 19 Computer Reports, 12 GPO Reports, 10 OU Reports
Jiji: 52 User Reports, 18 Group Reports, 15 Computer Reports, 18 GPO Reports, 13 OU Reports, 26 Exchange Reports, 4 Security Reports, 4 NTFS Reports, 6 Other Reports
Both products allow exporting reports to Excel, but Jiji lets you bulk export multiple reports to Excel. In addition, Jiji lets you schedule reports, which is an important feature. Maxpowersoft’s reports must be run manually. Another important feature is that some of the JiJi reports include an “Action” button in which certain actions, like unlocking, enabling, deleting users is allowed. Maxpowersoft only allows you to view attributes – not change them. You can view locked-out users, for instance, but you can’t unlock them.
