Web-based User Provisioning with ADAXES

adaxes_web_app

I’m a fan of Softerra’s LDAP Administrator, which I have reviewed here, and finally got around to checking out their new web-based AD management application. Web-based AD managers leverage Active Directory to make it useful for all users in an organization. As a result, they are priced higher than desktop applications that are only used by IT Admins.

An In-Depth Look At Softerra LDAP Administrator

LDAP Administrator is made for technical users familiar with LDAP query language. Its good LdapAdministrator1 for  software developers, and a certain class of IT administrators. With a polished, modern user interface, it  is a more user-friendly version of LDP.  I installed the product easily on my virtual machine test lab, but it took a little while to connect it to AD. Since I was running it on the domain controller while logged on as an Administrator I thought it would detect AD, and automatically bind to it using the current Windows security context. However, you first have to configure credentials and a base DN in order to bind to AD.

ADGroups

This is the first tool in Javelina’s ADToolkit product suite that I tested out. I received an email CreateGroupWithAdGroups1 with a  link to download ADGroups shortly after filling in contact data on the product’s web page. There was an error during installation stating: “WiseScript COM Registration Tool has stopped working”, but I was able to continue with the installation. Upon startup I was prompted to setup email, and I skipped over this step, too. The product lets administrators add, modify, and delete group attributes and members using a basic graphical user interface.

ActiveRoles Server

Quests’s ActiveRoles Server is a full-featured user provisioning system. It includes both ActiveRolesServer3 windows  client and web-based interfaces. The web interface allows customizing user provisioning templates, and self-service updates to delegate tasks that would otherwise have to be completed by IT. I was impressed with one feature in particular called “Managed Units”. Managed Units are virtual OUs that can be created within ActiveRoles Server to help manage AD without changing the structure of Active Directory. Another useful feature is temporal group management which automates adding and removing members of groups that need to be members only for a specified time period. This is a great product but at $25 per user in your Active Directory it is also one of the most expensive.
